We are a New Testament church, and we make spiritual decisions based on the Bible alone. This is what constitutes a nondenominational congregation. This means that we do believe that times change. It does however mean that we believe that God does not change.
We are the church of Christ at Lewiston. Though there are many churches across the country, and they are filled with Christians that share a brotherhood through Jesus Christ with us spiritually, there are however no leadership oversight connecting these churches. Each church of Christ stands on its own (autonomous). Local leaders make all decisions, just as they did in the first century churches. There are no headquarters anywhere except Heaven. This keeps us safe from the domino theory; just the same way that the French underground worked in World War II. The mistake of one leader can not effect the whole.
Well there were a couple of points that separate us from some of the other churches that are around. But the main point of this page is to inform you what to expect to find if you should decide to pay us a visit at one of our worship meetings. We understand as with the first time you attend any group meeting, that some can find it rather unsettling. And it is our job here and at church to put you to ease as much as possible. So we'll give that a shot in the next few paragraphs.
What you don't find is as important as what you do find. And one of the things you won't find is some of those "scary" things that you may be concerned about. What you will find instead is a fairly simple worship service, consisting of praise to the Lord. This will be in the form of prayer, song, communion and a sermon. A collection is taken, and it is the responsibility of the members to contribute as they have prospered, and as it is purposed in their hearts. This is not any amount set by the leadership or pledged in advance, and visitors are certainly not expected to participate in this, however if you wish to do so the Lord thanks you.
Well I almost forgot the most important part. If you can take the time to get to know us, you'll see how much we care for each other and ...you. Now don't let this cause you to back click out of here, we know that there are some inherent problems for a "new comer" with this, but we can't help it. It is a command of God and eventually becomes the very nature of each Christian. However we know how this can be uncomfortable. But let us put some of those fears to rest. We will recognize that you are a visitor, it would be less than honest to pretend otherwise. But we will do our level best to make you feel at home, and not embarrass you. And no salesman will call unless you request our help with a bible study or for some other purpose.
In closing we would like to extend you a hearty welcome, to come and worship the Lord with us. It would be an honor if you do. And it would be real special if we could learn to call one another friend. We would be honored if you do!
